Lignum Vitae is the national tree of Jamaica and the Bahamas. The name in Latin is “wood of life”, derived from its medicinal uses. This wood is one of the densest woods in the world, and it will sink in water. Lignum Vitae wood provides natural lubricating oils that do not dry out, and was widely used in shaft bearings.
